* Update
You would believe that transparency is important when handling other people's money, but it seems like the Board attorney doesn't think in the same way. The Board has SPENT close to $100,000 in attorneys fees in 2 years, decreased trash services and funds for maintenance. Not only their attorney refuses to show any proof of tree maintenance done prior the incident without explaning anything but also deliberately ignored my request for a disclosure packet. More recently denied me to access HOA financial books.
Surprisingly he sent me the requirements stated in the fair housing laws to accommodate my request for a handicap parking space for my disable MIL who barely can walk and needs a hip replacement.
I have lived in far way to many communities and it's the first time I'm sent VA laws and a litigation attorney to accommodate an every-day request? very interesting way of spending HOA monies.
The interesting thing about the HOA financial statements is that up to 2020 they spent about 11k yearly in tree maintenance, and 4k in attorney's fees, but suddenly after that they spent only $250 in tree maintenance and $100k in attorney's fees? What is the real reason why tree limbs were falling in the parking lot, why our fees went up by in the last years and how much tree maintenance you can do with $250?
This community needs to be handled in an efficient way for members who show their face, have sense of accountability and transparency.
But the same members of years actively defend their right to be there but are rarely seen . Yet, the common areas in this community need improvement, funds should be allocated efficiently and someone with real interest in this community should be handling the funds. There's no need to pay 100k in attorneys. It's unnecessary and negligent.
-------------
I'm beyond disgusted by the letter received from the HOA that until December, 2021 was composed by:
Mairi Kennedy, President
Marchyar Kumbang, Vice President
Donald Galetich, Director
Andrew Brewster, Treasurer
Wendy McMillan, Secretary
I've begged for my family safety since I moved in since I noticed the tree in the parking lot had not been trimmed and the green area is not taking care of, without luck. Finally, two weeks ago a tree limb fell on my car's roof - I'm 6 months pregnant and I was about to leave with my five-year-old, it struck the windshield and the water from the rain damaged my car.
The total cost for repair is over 5k. The response from Mairi (president) and Edward (management company) was that my insurance has to cover it and have refused to show proof of the maintenance done prior the incident (for which we pay $160/monthly). Two weeks later another dead tree limb fell next to me as I was walking my dog. Very interestingly, the HOA called the tree company to trim the tree the same day of the second incident - according to the tree company "as an urgent matter". Of course, they know they are responsible. But, for my surprise they not only refused to take any accountability for my car, but have been nasty in their response.
As other homeowners experienced with Mairi, sent an attorney's letter today. Instead of paying for my deductible, she went to spent attorney's fees with our money. So far, I have seen these people suing neighbors for improving their homes, threatening others with collection agencies over one missed payment, and threatening me (the homeowner affected) with the attorney we pay for their negligence? Yes, if you live here don't vote for this woman any more, it's a very serious issue. This HOA is working against homeowners not for them. We have one of the highest HOA fees in Fairfax County, yet no amenities, playground, etc. It seems our money is going to to pay this attorney and CMF, instead of going to improve our community. Please vote wisely next time.

I live in this community.. it’s one of the friendliest and most diverse communities, the location is awesome, and the schools are great!! but it doesn’t have the a an efficiently run HOA Board. It’s due to the fact that the HOA board are simply doing the bare minimum our guidelines called for when it was built in the 70’s, and doesn’t address today’s homeowner concerns, and it causes community conditions to worsen and safety concerns to rise…
as much as I don’t want to make this posting as it could reflect on our property values.. I must put the safety of our children as a priority to monetary property values..

There are so many issues in this community, just by looking at the board members where 4 out 5 are white American when most homeowners here belong to a minority group, with plenty people of color.
The latest attack to their neighbors is to give a month notice to switch to new parking permits, only giving 23 days to enforce towing. How about people traveling? How about people working during business hours? for parking permits that were in place for so many years, 23 days is unreasonable.

Even though we pay $160, they cannot mail them out? How about these five board members who are never seen (expect for Kristin) dropping them off?

They do pay $69k (half of the yearly HOA income) to the Board attorney when no other HOA around (specially as small as ours) pay this. How about allocating $200 to mail parking permits? Who runs this association seem neighbors as enemies. Interestingly in one year here, I have met only hardworking, quiet, and very respectful individuals. You wonder what really is going on with this HOA?
