What a beautiful neighborhood. Devonwood lies in a tropical hardwood hammock in Pinecrest. It’s rich history began when a Chicago native by the name of John Warwick, came here in 1912. Warwick was a Florida pioneer contractor and land developer. He acquired property on the Miami Rock Ridge which became known as Warwick Hammock. He lived there until his death in the 1950’s.

Warwick’s original 1926 stone mansion was designated as a historical landmark by the Metro Historic Preservation Board in 1982. The board declared it an outstanding example of masonry vernacular architecture in Miami Dade County, architecturally noteworthy for its large size and its adaptability to the area’s climate, in its original state. It is currently a privately owned residence.

Warwick Hammock was subdivided in 1962 from an area called “Forest View” in Miami. Harrill C. King’s company developed this area into what is known today as Devonwood by bringing in roads, electricity, and water. Bobbe Dooley of Dooley Realty, Inc. marketed the development. King built the first home for Bobbe and her husband Joe.

It was Harrill C. King’s vision to preserve as much of the natural hammock as possible. Wild monkeys, foxes, bobcats, raccoons, and oppossums roamed the grounds. According to Bobbe Dooley, the monkeys “had to go” because they rang doorbells and stole porch lights. Today, the foxes still call Devonwood home. These shy creatures are periodically spotted but do not pose a threat to people. Many of the original homes are literally sculpted around the coral rock and native foliage. Through the years some of the original lots were sold and contractors built houses.

In 1982, the Association of Devonwood Homeowners, Inc. was incorporated and a logo was designated for the community. The non-profit corporation now acts for the benefits of its homeowner’s members. As of 1989, troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol currently protect the neighborhood.

Over the years, biologists from Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden have visited yards in Devonwood. They discovered a very rare, naturally-occurring hybrid fern called the Biscayne spleenwort, known to exist in only a few other tropical hardwood hammocks. It only occurs where its parents are present, both of which are state-listed endangered species. Their findings were recorded and a booklet on identifying and caring for ferns was made available.

The tropical hardwood hammock is an ecosystem consisting of broad-leafed trees, shrubs, and vines. These hammocks form a dense canopy forest with shrubs and vines at the ground level and outer edges. South Florida hardwood hammocks develop only in areas protected from fire, flood, salt water, and on limestone ridges several feet above waterlevel. This environment is habitat for many species of wildlife and plants. The lush, rich vegetation is the focal point of this forest.

Tropical hardwood hammocks are globally endangered. Most of the hammocks have been lost to development, leaving small patches or fragments of hammock habitat in the southern half of South Florida, with concentrations in the Florida Everglades and Florida Keys.

Devonwood is truly a unique environment. Although it is not a state protected hammock, many of its residents continue to maintain landscaping practices to nurture it.
